Sunshine Corner No More

There used to be a fantastic little restaurant in Edinburgh on Buccleuch Street not far from University of Edinburgh, called Coyaba.

It was Jamaican - laying claim to being the only one in Scotland - and a fabulous find if every there was one.

The beer was imported, the food hot and bursting with flavour, the atmosphere calm and friendly.

In fact, it was probably my favourite ever eating place.

Geography meant I never had much chance to get there in recent times, but being back east now, I was so looking forward to going back.

So understandably I am gutted to learn that it has closed down.

Plenty others were too by the fond farewell messages left on review sites by other patrons mourning its loss.

Thanks to a gift of Levi Roots excellent Reggae Reggae cookbook, I’ve been dabbling in Carribbean cooking with Scotch Bonnet, old spice and rum.

But it’s never the same as going out and having the real thing.

There are a couple of others I was tempted by - notably Bamboo Grove and Caribbean Scene - but both are in London which is fine on a flying visit, but a bit of a hike otherwise.

So if anyone knows of any Caribbean eateries worth trying in Edinburgh or elsewhere in Scotland, be sure and let me know.
